Theatre Alibi brings stories and songs to the streets of Exeter

This September, Theatre Alibi is heading outdoors to share stories set against the backdrop of neighbourhood streets and local landmarks in St Thomas.

Theatre Alibi have been touring work for young and adult audiences for over 35 years, with storytelling at the heart of all of their work. Exploring themes of childhood and anarchic fun, wartime and struggle, this is the first time Theatre Alibi will take their work onto the streets of the place they have called home since 1982.

Previously, Theatre Alibi celebrated St Thomas through an interactive exhibition of its history, its stories and its people in October 2019. The exhibition took place in Theatre Alibi’s home, Emmanuel Hall, with people contributing their own memories and memorabilia of St Thomas to form a new digital archive.

A lot has changed since then. In May 2020, Theatre Alibi were going to put on a show inspired by the stories shared at the exhibition. Although that’s been postponed until 2021, Theatre Alibi didn’t want to leave it at that. Theatre Albi believes that we need stories, live music and a bit of fun, now more than ever.

From 5th to 13th September 2020, Theatre Alibi will creatively and safely take storytelling and songs to the people of St Thomas.

St Thomas Story Tours are free 1 hour 15 minute gentle walks around St Thomas, starting from Emmanuel Hall and stopping along the way at local landmarks to hear uplifting stories and beautiful songs inspired by community memories.

Nikki Sved, Theatre Alibi’s Artistic Director, says: “It feels very special to be telling stories about St Thomas in the very streets and parks where the events took place. Throughout the pandemic we’ve been staying in close touch with our St Thomas neighbours and now at last we are getting the chance to share our stories with them in person. After a long, long wait, I can’t tell you how much we’re all looking forward to it.”
