Music: Jazz on the Quay
Malaika Kigongo enjoys an afternoon of free music in the Transit Shed on Exeter’s Quayside
I went to the first Jazz on the Quay event of the season on Sunday 29th June, and the live music, cheerful crowd, and beautiful waterfront setting made it the perfect summer afternoon!
Each Sunday there will be a different jazz band, and for the opening afternoon, we were treated to a performance by local group La Vie en Rose. The group consists of five musicians from differing backgrounds who were joined together by their shared love of Gypsy Jazz and Swing.

A lively crowd was gathered around the band, some people sat around benches soaking up the sun, while others pitched camp chairs in the shade of the Transit Shed.
The band played upbeat, toe-tapping tunes that had many people dancing – some moving in synchronized steps, others jigging joyfully to the beat.
La Vie en Rose filled the air with sounds of the accordion, violin, acoustic guitar, double bass, rhythm guitar, ukelele and clarinet.
The Quay was especially busy as it was also the day of the annual Dragon Boat Festival. As the teams boarded the boats next to the Transit Shed, many danced their way past, with the jazz providing an upbeat soundtrack for each upcoming race.
The combination of the high-spirited jazz and the excitement of the Dragon Boat Festival created a joyful atmosphere along the waterfront. Whether you’re a jazz enthusiast or just looking for a relaxed way to spend a Sunday afternoon, this event is sure to be enjoyed by everyone.
Jazz on the Quay is a free afternoon of music happening every Sunday until 31st August (except 27th July).
