Event: Word Kitchen

Pippa Marriott shares the menu from the regular spoken word performance night, which hosted its first outing at Exeter Phoenix on 10th June

Word Kitchen hosted a wonderfully varied and engaging evening at Exeter Phoenix. The 14 readers took the audience to many places including Exeter before the Blitz, down country lanes, on a bus to Karachi, to the beach and to the bedside; we visited the gentle village of Eastwood Minster, a garden full of flowers and memories, and Mr Sykes-Hedges’s excessive hoard of tinned fruit labels (all of them rectangular). The excellent quality and different styles of writing kept everyone engrossed, and between times there was much conviviality and supportive chatter.

From Left to Right: Performers Ysella Sims and Rashan Hegde share their work.

Word Kitchen's Open Mic events celebrate a growing community of writers who enjoy sharing their work aloud. Although lots of the listeners are also writers, others come along for the pure pleasure of being read to, and hearing how the stories and fragments rebound and reverberate with each other, with themes and images picking up felicitous connections as the evening progresses.
